What This Episode Is About
Who is the one person you’ve rehearsed a conversation with, and still haven’t had it? Last episode was about what you’re still holding on to from an earlier chapter. This one opens the Honest Conversation pillar: most stalled business decisions are really stalled conversations, and every week of delay makes the conversation more expensive. Meagan walks through three moves (Name it, Price the delay, Script the first sentence) plus a 48-hour exercise to get the conversation started this week.Key Takeaways
- Underneath most stalled decisions (pricing, team, direction) is a conversation you haven’t had
- Avoiding the conversation feels free, but a waiting decision is an outcome you’re not getting yet
- The first sentence is where most of us stall: what you want to talk about, why it matters to you, and an invitation
- Honest is not harsh, and kind is not vague
Three Moves to Get the Conversation Started
Speed-to-decision here means saying the hard thing sooner, not saying it perfectly. Three moves get you there.Name It
Finish the sentence “I can’t decide ___ until I talk to ___.” Be specific about the person and the decision the conversation is blocking. Most owners already know the answer the moment they write it down.Price the Delay
Put a monthly number on the silence: the revenue, hours, or energy the waiting is costing you. Multiply it by the number of months it has already waited. That’s what avoidance has cost so far, and it keeps adding up.Script the First Sentence
Write one sentence, in your own words: kind, direct, and specific. Say what you want to talk about, why it matters to you, and invite them in. Read it aloud once to an empty room before you say it to them. The Key Insight
The decision usually isn’t the hard part. The conversation is. Every week you wait, it gets more expensive, so say the first sentence sooner, not perfectly.
Your Action This Week: The 48-Hour Exercise
Write four lines on one page: the conversation and the person, the decision it’s blocking, what the delay costs you each month, and your first sentence. Then, within 48 hours, say the sentence or put the conversation on the calendar with a date and a time.
